And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
Mark 5:2 (KJV)
Secondly, in this passage, the man came to Jesus in his desperate condition. Both his spiritual and physical state portrayed a man in total depravity. This demon-possessed man came out from a dreadful and hopeless place — a place where all hope seemed lost. Such imagery vividly reflects the condition of humanity apart from God. We may not be demon-possessed, yet spiritually we live among a fallen and hopeless race. Like the Scripture says, we were once “having no hope, and without God in the world” (Ephesians 2:12).
This man represents every one of us. Yet in such a miserable condition, he came to Jesus. He came with no pretension, no hypocrisy, and no self-righteousness. In his utter brokenness, he presented himself humbly before the Lord. This should also be our attitude toward Christ. We must come before Him honestly, without pretending to be righteous or spiritually strong. We may hide our true condition from men, but nothing can be hidden from Christ.
Many come to church trusting in their achievements, reputation, or outward appearance, thinking these things will make them acceptable before God. But this is not so, for “we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags…” (Isaiah 64:6). It is time for us to approach God with genuine humility. The Lord Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit…” (Matthew 5:3).
O believer, let us come before the Lord without pretension or pride. Christ came to deliver us from hopelessness and sin. Therefore, let us repent of our prideful attitudes and present ourselves before Him with humility, repentance, and sincerity, worshiping Him in spirit and in truth.
